The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital was inaugurated in 1997. Cardiac surgical services are managed as part of a highly effective multidisciplinary program within Chung Shan medical university heart Center. We offer an extensive range of cardiac surgical services, from repairing congenital heart defects in infants and children to performing heart transplantations and other complex procedures for high-risk adult patients. We address off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) and minimally invasive valvular surgery with excellent results. Transcather heart valve replacement can also be performed as an alternative procedure to open heart surgery. Aortic surgery became common surgery after induction of thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR). We can performed hybrid surgery for complicated type A aortic dissection or huge aortic arch aneurysm using open replacement and TEVAR. Our department has been approved as a heart transplant facility and has performed heart transplant as well as ventricular assist device (VAD) surgery. In congenital cardiac surgery, we approach correction of complex cardiac anomaly, even in infants. We also performed peripheral arterial disease using hybrid procedures such as balloon dilatation and distal bypass surgery. All cardiac surgery faculty are actively engaged in teaching medical students, residents and fellows about the latest cardiac surgical techniques and investigations.
