7.8% (n=35) scored 24 or higher of ASRS indicating highly likely Adult ADHD. More heroin-dependent patients of ADHD-P had a current depressive episode (p = 0.02) . They had higher Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) scores (p = 0.003), and more severe heroin dependence (p = 0.006). Poorer family support and quality of life in physical, and psychological domains were found in patients of ADHD-P compared to ADHD-N.
Our results showed that heroin-dependent patients with more ADHD symptoms suffered from complex comorbidities and impairment in daily life than other heroin-dependent patients. Findings indicate the importance and relevance of assessment and treatment of ADHD and the associated comorbid psychiatric disorders such as depression in heroin-dependent patients. With further longitudinal follow-up and intervention studies, the comprehensive assessment and management of heroin-dependent patients with ADHD symptoms may indicate ways of providing more effective and more holistic interventions.
