The Otolaryngology Department of the CSMU hospital was established in the same year as the hospital, and our department was the very first otolaryngology department in central Taiwan. The department can be divided into 4 subspecialties, which have its own expertise in managing relevant ear, nose and throat diseases. Below are the main features of these subspecialties.

Otology: We have a very good reputation in managing different ear disorders, such as external ear diseases, otitis media, cholesteatoma and inner ear diseases. We also have a very good team for helping patients with hearing problems, offering them with high-quality hearing aids and for very severe cases, the cochlear implants. We also collaborate with basic science researchers of CSMU in studying human deaf genes and animal models of hearing disorders.

Rhinology: In the outpatient setting, we have various facilities that can enhance the accuracy of disease diagnosis, like the high-resolution endoscopic system, smell testing, CT scan and MRI. For nasal surgeries, we use minimally-invasive instruments for most of the sinonasal surgeries, including turbinectomy and endoscopic sinus surgeries. In addition, to deal with more complicated sinus surgeries or skull base surgeries, our department uses advanced intraoperative navigation system to ensure accuracy and safety of the operation.

Laryngology: Our department has high resolution-endoscopic system and stroboscope to facilitate the diagnosis of throat and voice disorders. For neoplasms of the throat, we introduce the trans-oral laser microsurgery to treat early stage glottic cancers with preservation of phonation function, thus enhance the quality of life for these patients. In addition, we introduce the Da Vinci robotic surgery in 2015 to treat various throat disorders. With the latest 4th generation Xi robotic arms, the surgeries are furthermore improved with better surgical field, better hemostasis and smaller instrument sizes.

Head and Neck: For the treatment of head and neck tumors, we utilize intraoperative nerve monitoring system, 3-D endoscopic system and the Da Vinci robotic surgical system to improve the quality of therapy. Our hospital also organizes a well-established treatment team for the head and neck cancer patients, providing them with holistic and high-quality care, including surgical excision, reconstructive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, rehabilitation, and social workers assistance.
