Message from the Chairman

Amid the multifaceted challenges of global climate change, growing pressure on healthcare resources, and an aging society, medical institutions shoulder an exceptionally critical role. As the head of the Chung Shan Medical University system, I recognize that effective governance mechanisms and forward-looking strategic guidance are fundamental to advancing sustainable development. Upholding the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability, the Board of Directors actively oversees the Hospital’s strategic execution in the three key dimensions of economic performance, social responsibility, and environmental protection, ensuring prudent allocation of resources and effective risk management.

We are committed to enhancing the quality of medical services while balancing operational efficiency and resource sustainability. Through digital transformation, the introduction of energy-saving facilities, and process optimization, we strive to achieve the dual goals of reducing environmental impact and improving patient satisfaction. With the full support of the University and hospital management, the Affiliated Hospital has established a Sustainability Development Committee to promote cross-departmental collaboration, ensuring that all initiatives align with national policies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In recent years, the Hospital has accomplished notable sustainability milestones, including the installation of solar power systems, promotion of green procurement, and adoption of smart healthcare applications. Patient satisfaction surveys and internal audits are used to monitor progress and inform continuous improvement. Looking ahead, we will strengthen governance mechanisms, introduce more sustainable technologies and performance monitoring tools, and deepen cooperation with communities, government agencies, and academic institutions. Guided by the unwavering commitment of the Board, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital is poised to become a model of sustainable healthcare—environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and governed with resilience.

Message from the President

Sustainable development is a shared core value of universities and healthcare systems, and an essential responsibility that Chung Shan Medical University, as a medical education institution, must uphold. Confronted with the challenges of population aging, climate change, and the growing demand for healthcare, we continue to advance our three core missions—education, research, and service—while integrating academic knowledge with practical application to promote comprehensive enhancements in sustainable governance at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital. The University actively participates in the Hospital’s governance meetings, providing policy-level support for sustainable transformation in management, patient care, teaching innovation, and social responsibility.

With “Health Promotion” and “Holistic Healthcare” as our core educational and research principles, we work closely with the Affiliated Hospital to integrate the University’s strengths in medical research, smart technology, sustainable healthcare system design, and clinical practice. Together, we drive initiatives such as green healthcare, smart care, community health promotion, rural health support, and international cooperation. We encourage faculty and students to engage in interdisciplinary research and sustainability advocacy, applying theory to clinical settings to realize the University’s social impact in tangible ways.

We also guide the Hospital in aligning with domestic and international policy frameworks, responding to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), GRI Standards, and Taiwan’s national health policy priorities. By deepening governance transparency, enhancing information disclosure, and strengthening stakeholder engagement, we help ensure the Hospital’s stability and adaptability in a changing environment. Moving forward, we will continue to leverage the University’s resources and innovative capacity to support the Hospital in realizing its vision of “Smart, Shared, and Sustainable” healthcare, reinforcing Chung Shan Medical University’s role as a bridge between education, healthcare, and society.

Message from the Superintendent

Chung Shan Medical University Hospital upholds the core values of “Healing People, Treating Illness, and Caring for the Heart,” with a longstanding commitment to enhancing the quality of medical care and advancing social well-being. In the rapidly evolving context of medical technology and societal needs, we understand that sustainable development is not only a responsibility but also a mission for every healthcare professional. Guided by a patient-centered approach, we promote smart healthcare, optimize clinical workflows, strengthen patient safety, and ensure information transparency—building a healthcare environment that is equitable, accessible, and deeply humanistic.

The Hospital has established a Sustainability Development Management Committee and a patient safety governance framework, engaging department heads in the formulation of short- and medium-term strategies. These encompass energy conservation and carbon reduction, green procurement, resource recycling, and enhanced cybersecurity, with regular reviews of implementation outcomes. In alignment with government policy, we actively participate in Health-Promoting Hospital initiatives, integrated community care, long-term care, and cancer prevention programs—demonstrating our responsiveness to societal change.

Amid pressures from rising costs, changes in payment systems, and workforce mobility, we have reinforced smart management systems and digitalized service processes to enhance efficiency and operational stability. We have also expanded our community healthcare network and outreach to underserved areas, addressing challenges related to an aging society and health inequities. Recent achievements include streamlining outpatient services, strengthening volunteer programs, and implementing robust data governance, resulting in improved patient satisfaction and service quality.

Sustainable development is a long-term commitment. We will continue to expand the use of renewable energy, implement carbon management systems, and deepen staff training and community engagement. Through innovation and collaboration, we will ensure that healthcare delivery and social responsibility complement one another—realizing our vision of safeguarding health while advancing sustainability.

Message from the Deputy Superintendent, Director of the Medical Quality Center, and Chairperson of the Sustainability Development Management Committee

The sustainability initiatives of Chung Shan Medical University Hospital span multiple dimensions, including medical quality, administrative efficiency, resource utilization, and environmental protection. As Deputy Superintendent, Director of the Medical Quality Center, and Chairperson of the Sustainability Development Management Committee, I am entrusted with integrating medical, educational, administrative, and research resources, overseeing the formulation of sustainability strategies, and ensuring their effective implementation in both daily operations and long-term planning. Through a clear governance framework and well-defined division of responsibilities, the Hospital has established institutionalized processes that embed sustainability principles into procurement management, equipment maintenance, workforce allocation, and resource use. Departmental coordination and performance feedback mechanisms further enhance our agility and adaptability.

We place particular emphasis on cross-departmental collaboration and data-driven management. Ongoing monitoring covers key indicators such as energy efficiency, patient satisfaction, and medical waste management, supported by robust tracking and feedback systems. In alignment with government policies, we actively promote digital transformation and the adoption of green healthcare practices. Externally, the Hospital engages in community health programs, international collaborations, and public health initiatives, reinforcing our commitment to social responsibility and expanding our positive impact on the healthcare system.

To address the challenges posed by an aging society, workforce mobility, and policy changes, we are advancing the implementation of smart management and information governance systems, alongside setting medium- and long-term sustainability goals. These include upgrading green building facilities, strengthening carbon emission monitoring systems, and transitioning toward holistic, patient-centered care. Moving forward, we will continue to integrate systems and drive innovative actions so that sustainability becomes not only a directive from leadership but also an intrinsic part of Chung Shan Medical University Hospital’s organizational culture—embedded in our daily practices and guiding our commitment to positive change.
